Meniere's ear disease is a problem where the nutrient fluid in the inner ear, called the endolymph is not being properly drained due to the dilation or constriction of the drainage path called the endolympathic duct. This fluid is supposed to be regulated normally in a normal inner ear but a problem in the endolympathic duct disrupts this regulation. The excessive volume of fluid exerts pressure in the inner ear and the fluid flows to other areas causing many problems like hearing problems and loss of balance. So far there is no conclusive cause to this problem so treatment lies in solving the symptoms. Here are 5 symptoms you must know. Tinnitus A constant ringing, buzzing or tingling in the ear. Some tinnitus sufferers complain about roaring or screeching sounds. Tinnitus is a common symptom of meniere's ear disease but tinnitus may also be caused by other things like overexposure to loud noises, old age, stress, head trauma and tumors. Tinnitus itself can be treated depending on their other causes. Fluctuating or progressive hearing loss Gradual hearing loss occur in many Meniere's ear disease sufferers. If menieres is not immediately treated, it may lead to total deafness. Some victims can suffer hyperacusis or over-sensitiveness to sound which is the opposite. Vertigo attacks This can be a very big problem among victims of meniere's ear disease. Victims often suffer loss of balance, motion sickness, dizziness, nausea and vomiting. Vertigo attacks can last from twenty minutes up to several hours leaving the patient practically dehydrated. This is followed later by severe exhaustion. Vertigo attacks are a big problem because it can sometimes be unpredictable and debilitating. This can be treated with anti-nausea and anti-emetic drugs followed by bed rest. Sudden fall sometimes referred to as drop attacks. The victim suddenly falls without warning due to damage to inner ear organs related to maintaining balance. This also comes without warning and is accompanied by vertigo. It is quite dangerous if the victim is anywhere near a staircase or a high narrow area.
Treatment for meniere's ear disease can start at the dietary level. Decreasing the intake of sodium, caffeine and MSG is recommended. Stress relief is also recommended. Medication is available for dealing with the other symptoms.
